WSPP - Washington Society of Psychoanalytic Psychology

Contemporary Kleinian Theory and Technique

A THREE-SESSION COURSE WITH JUDITH ROVNER, MSW
Dates and time: October 23, 30 and November 6, 2009, 9:30am-12:30pm
Location: To be determined

In this workshop we will study some of Melanie Klein’s main concepts such as the psychic positions, unconscious phantasy, internal objects, envy and projective identification. We will explore how these ideas were developed especially in the work of Bion, Betty Joseph, and John Steiner. In particular we will study Bion’s notion of containment, Steiner’s concept of psychic retreats and Joseph’s idea about the total situation of transference as well as their development of the idea of projective identification and its implication for the analytic understanding of transference and countertransference in clinical practice.

The sessions will be a combination of didactic and clinical material with the goal of better understanding the challenge of helping people in their struggle to make psychic change. The presenter will have her own clinical examples to illustrate the concepts and to illustrate a Kleinian way of working. In addition participants will be invited to bring in their work to enrich their understanding.

Readings will be sent to registrants when they sign up.

The course will be limited to 10 participants. We anticipate that this seminar may fill up quickly – and slots will be filled on a first come, first serve basis.

Registration: $185 for WSPP members; $275 for non-members. (Non-members are invited to join WSPP for $60.00 and save on registration.) This course earns 9 CEU’s which are included in the price.
